Who We Are
Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Linda and Millard Fuller in Americus, Georgia. Their goal was to tackle a significant social problem – affordable housing for all. Habitat believes that everyone deserves a simple, decent and affordable place to live. Since 1976, Habitat has helped 6.8 million people find strength, stability and independence through safe, decent and affordable shelter.
Our local Habitat affiliate, Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity, was founded in 1987. We have to date build 139 homes in Brown County as of February 2025.
What We Do
Our affiliate operates three primary programs including our new construction Home Building Program, ReStore and Rock the Block Program. The ReStore is a retail operation that collects new and gently used donated home goods and building materials and sells them to the public at a fraction of the retail price. Profits from the ReStore are used to support our Home Building Program. Since opening its doors in 2009, our ReStore has built nine homes for our affiliate while diverting 15.5 pounds of materials from landfills.
Our new construction Home Building Program is what our affiliate is most well known for. This program allows our organization to partner with low-income, hard-working families in Brown County to offer the opportunity of affordable home ownership to individuals and families who meet our three program qualifications which include an applicant’s need, ability to pay and willingness to partner. Habitat does not give homes away. Families do pay a mortgage, insurance and property taxes. Our homes are made affordable through volunteer labor and an interest free mortgage.
Rock the Block is a neighborhood cleanup and repair program. Homeowners is designated neighborhoods apply for the program. The program is offered in September timeframe.
